[Weekly wrapup] Sunday post #56 Very Exciting ARC News, Some Dewey's News And Finally - A Haul!

So before I start telling you that I don’t remember what happened this week as well, let’s just start by saying that this week as AAAAAALLLLL been about this event:

Today @tordotcompub wins my affections with surprise #bookmail, and of nothing else but my beloved #murderbot!! I swear I came back from the post office grinning like an idiot (if you don’t believe me look at my Story on Instagram. But you have been warned.) I already got the e-galleys and wasn’t expecting anything more, but to have actual print copies of one of my favorite series, INTERNATIONALLY? Tor.com, you guys. You’re like my favorite publisher now ❤ I am SOOOOOO excited to be able to post my review of Murderbot #2, soon soon soon!! It’s already scheduled, waiting to see the world sometime soon (hint: May! 😂) And now get ready for me to shove these #books in your face on a weekly basis, everyone. I mean it. These are my first international (non-indie) publisher copies. I WILL be flaunting them. SHAMELESSLY. And also LOOK – WE INTERNATIONALS CAN DO IT!!! 🎉🎉🎉 I hope you don’t mind. I’m just really happy right now 😂

A post shared by avalinah | Evelina (@avalinahsbooks) on

And it made me ever so happy, I’m still basically the happiest little creature ever. Thank you so much, Tor.com! This is my first non-indie #bookmail, and I can’t tell you how lucky I feel to have received it, as an international reviewer.

But besides that, what has happened this week? Let’s have a look:

  • My wonderful friend Jackie @ Death By Tsundoku has finally reclaimed (most of) her blog! Please guys, go over there and welcome her back – as she has gone through a forced hiatus, brought on by losing access to her blog, and we’ve got to give her some love!
  • I got nominated for the Book Blogger Awards by Shealea. WHAT, RIGHT?! I AM SO HAPPY! Thank you so much!
  • I have also learned that my big ole plans for Dewey’s are floating belly up, because I will not be able to sit tight on my butt all day and read, as was planned. But fear not! I will still be reading! I even have a TBR. But my checkins might look slightly different than beanbag-lap-tea 😂 you will see!
  • I have caught up with *some* of my comments and blog hopping
  • I have given up with posting in a way too rigid schedule and *gasp!* missed a post – and been happy to do it

~ Last Week On The Blog ~

Last week I asked the question of whether we post too much content and neglect actually reading everyone else’s posts! And I also reviewed a great book, The Sunday Lunch Club, which I can strongly recommend! Go on and read the review, if you haven’t yet.

~ Coming Up Next Week~

Coming up next week, we have two reviews for very different books – The Long Way Down, an urban fantasy I enjoyed greatly! It will be a fun review with 5 reasons, so come read! And also, a buddy read review with JJ @ This Dark Material for Donna Tartt’s The Little Friend, which I didn’t enjoy too much, as you can see from the star rating. And lastly, since Dewey’s is coming up, on Friday I’ll be posting my Dewey’s TBR! EXCITED!!

~ Little Book Haul ~

Well, this week I finally hauled some books. But it’s alright, since I have been hauling so little lately! It is also a very exciting haul. Redemption song is the sequel to The Long Way Down, which I greatly enjoyed and will be reviewing next week. Rogue Protocol is book #3 of my favorite Murderbot series. The Calculating Stars is an ARC about a female astronaut, and Spinning Silk is based on Japanese folklore, read more about it on Goodreads (click the cover) – and if you want the ARC, write me and I’ll give you the author’s contact!

~ In The Bookish Community ~

Cahleen @ The Alt Story writes about 5 quiet, but emotionally huge books that left a really big impression

Sheila @ She’s Going Book Crazy talks about her favorite literary pranksters

Nicole @ Feed Your Fiction Addiction talks about the expectations we might have about PoC names in books

Marie @ Drizzle and Hurricane Books talks about how you could take control of your TBR pile *gasp!*

Aimee @ Aimee, Always shares some AMAZING free services for your blog designs

So how has your week been? And what are you reading? What did you haul?

As usual, I’m linking up with the Sunday post meme at Kimba’s book blog and Stacking The Shelves over at Tynga’s Reviews.

I’m Evelina and I try to blog about books that matter, with a bit of fun there too! Disability and equality will be topics you see a lot, but there’s also a lot of scifi, fantasy and… GIFs. I’m also the proud founder of #ARCsAnonymous.

    1. Thank you! Yeah, Tor are great, they were a miracle – but I still struggle with other publishers xD I really want one ARC now, but I don’t think I’m going to get it – cause of the whole NetGalley thing (it’s a “wish” now, and it’s a sequel to a book I was approved for before)

Aw, thank you! I’m really happy you like my content <3

  1. Aw, what a great week, Evelina! Congrats on getting the books! I’m just waiting to start the e-copy I got. You excitement is infectious! And don’t worry much about having to post many times in a week. You take the time you need for yourself and it will all work out eventually :*

  2. Congrats with Tor! It must be an amazing emotion.
I’ve recently started to add their book much more on my shelves, because as much as I like YA, Tor has some good fantasy, horror and sci-fi novel that are also a mix of all the three things. And for some reasons, on Netgalley, Tor always approve my requests?

Spinning Silk has a really interesting cover! I will check the blurb. I’m always up to book inspired byu every type of folklore

    1. Thank you, Camilla! I haven’t visited your blog in too long 🙂 I will definitely visit today!
Yep, Tor has some very nice titles, and I love it how they don’t just focus on one genre, but basically EVERYTHING otherworldly 🙂 it’s great.
Actually, on NetGalley, Tor doesn’t always approve my requests, or at least didn’t xD but I guess now that I’m on the mailing list, it doesn’t matter? 😀

  3. Evelina I love that discussion topic as I have been thinking about it after going on a very long hiatus blogging. I’ve just started blogging back this week, and I have definitely changed my priorities, plus situation has changed it for me as I now have a 3 year old which I didn’t have when I was actively blogging. I’ve decided that I lost focus on WHY I started blogging to begin with and got caught up in the getting as many followers etc. but now first and foremost blogging and reading are hobbies to me, and I never want it to ever feel like a chore/job.

    1. I have noticed that it’s not only me – a lot of bloggers are feeling this way lately. Maybe we DO do too much work, you know? We just tire ourselves out. I am still keeping up my crazy posting schedule, but just because I want to get all those backlogged reviews written and off my shoulders. After that, I’m going to take it easy 🙂
And you’re right, taking care of your family and child is definitely the first priority 🙂

  4. Congratulations on getting hold of the Murderbot series:)). And huge kudos to Tor – they are one of my favourite publishers because of the range of writers they publish – like the great Jo Walton, for instance. And of course – Martha Wells! Have a great week, Evelina!

    1. Thank you 🙂 Tor are amazing! They are so playful and diverse, and just… I don’t know, they feel young, you know? Like, inventive, fresh. That’s what’s good about them 🙂

    1. Thanks girl 🙂 I know, it was one hell of a month! Oh, and thanks 🙂 you will enjoy her reviews!
Thank you, I hope things are going fine for you as well. I have been too busy to catch up, but I remember my lovely team of mods for sure and I hope everything is fine with you and the others 🙂 will have to catch up sometime.

  5. Congrats on the hard copies! I too usually only get e-galleys from publishers, because those publishers are usually in the UK. But last month I was offered a physical copy by a US publisher and you better believe I was all over that! happy Reading 🙂

    1. Thank you! 🙂 oh, thank you! I didn’t get a pingback. But that was ages ago now, I wonder which post xD sorry I didn’t visit at the time! But thank you for sharing <3
And I can share the request template, if you want 🙂 another blogger also shared it with me! I need to write it down somewhere though cause I can't do it now xD

  6. Ohhh congratulations on the Tor bookmail, this is so amazing and well deserved 🙂 It’s only the beginning, I’m sure 😉
I’m glad you are feeling a bit more relaxed about blogging – I used to freak out about missing a day of blogging and sometimes, I still do, but…. it’s also good to miss a post sometimes and just ,take time to relax 🙂
    I hope you’ll have a fantastic week! 🙂

    1. Well, I don’t know about the beginning because I haven’t requested more 😀 it’s just sooooo weird and stressful to request directly! I just can’t bring myself to 😀

  7. Congrats on the first book! I think a lot of us are feeling the pressure of our schedules, so I understand. I’m hoping you have a great week and enjoy your new books!

  8. Yay for Murderbot! Can’t wait to see what you think. And congrats on the award nomination- well deserved!

Loved your discussion post on content too. Very thought provoking, and it does address that age old issue ha ha- blogging vs visiting blogs. There is only so much time, after all, and I think we all struggle with it!

Hope you have a nice week 🙂

    1. You should definitely check them out, they’re both fun and dig at deep questions. I’d love to see your reviews 🙂 please share the links with me, when you’ve read them! I wouldn’t want to miss it.

And yes, I believe we have to ask for the copies to get them 😀 that’s the hardest part for me 😀

  9. Yay! I’m so happy that you were able to get print copies from Tor! That is so awesome! I actually don’t have a posting schedule but i’m trying to come up with one. Work has been crazy busy lately and I haven’t had much time to read or blog so I’m trying to figure out something that works for me.

I hope you have another wonderful week!

  10. The ARCs look great, as I’ve already told you! xD I’m doing Dewey’s too this time. Can’t wait to see your TBR!

  11. Ahhhhh I’m still SO EXCITED for you and your book mail news!!! 😀 And our buddy read post because even if the novel was so-so, your questions were amazing and made it so much more fun to review and reflect 🙂 Can’t wait to see all the fabulous titles you’ve picked for the readathon!

  12. Yaay for the books and for Jackie’s blog and for the award nomination! But especially the books, and not only because you love the series but it’s also a big win for International bloggers!!

I have a few plans for theday of Dewey’s readathon too that might get in the way of reading but I will do my best. Do not have a TBR. I read too many books to add even more to that pile!

Oh, Spinning Silk sounds awesome, I am always interested in Japanese everything – even got a book by a Japanese writer this week from a book fair.

    Have a great week!

    1. Thanks 🙂 yes, I also felt like it’s a big win! And I received another one today ;_; I can’t believe it! So happy.

I hope you can at least partly participate in Dewey’s 🙂 it does wonders for the TBR 😀 I picked a lot of short books xD I will probably get through a lot of them and it will be awesome 😀

I hope you managed to contact the author for Spinning Silk? 🙂

      1. I saw the new bookmail on insta and I was so happy for you!!

I will participate, just have a sushi date to get to, but I reckon it won’t take the entire day. I plan to finish some of the thousands of books I am currently reading :D.

And yes, I got the book and she was really nice! Cannot wait to read that either – but I am trying not to start another book until the read-a-thon.

  13. Hey! Thanks for the link! I feel like I really must be a slightly seasoned blogger now. 😉 But in even bigger news, how cool is it that you got book mail??? Yay!! Congrats! You give me hope. I really do understand how exciting that must have been. I use my Instagram to post pictures of my kids instead of for bookish things, but I want to go subscribe to you just so I can see that story (except I think stories disappear, right).

So did you feel a sense of freedom when you didn’t do that post?
Cahleen Hudson recently posted…Alaska will kill you but it’s so awesome! My Profile

    1. Thank you! It is indeed very cool 😀 it’s incredibly hard to get bookmail where I live, international and all, but apparently, doable! 😀 so maybe that day will come for you too 🙂 although it’s definitely smart to, um, pick the publishers that are closer to you. For example, the US books take FOREVEEERRRR to arrive, and the UK ones are quite quick. For you, hmm.. Maybe contacting Australian publishers would be smart? That, or American, I guess. But probably ebooks for a while still 🙂

Yup, stories do disappear, unfortunately! But please feel free to follow me on Instagram, and if I don’t miss the notification like I did on Twitter (somehow I’m even worse on Insta) I’d gladly follow you back 🙂

And I couldn’t say I felt too much freedom at missing that one post – but the bright side is that I didn’t feel despair at it either 😀 (several months ago I would have!) So… Progress 😀

  14. That is an amazing haul Evelina, it always makes my day when I get book mail, I don’t get as much from publishers as I used to, but it’s great when you do. And I heard about Dewey’s read-athon, but I’ve never taken part, I my have to try and sign up! I hope you have a great week! 🙂

    1. Thank you, Jas 🙂 oh, you should definitely try Dewey’s! The next one is at the end of October. It’s always so much fun, you just have to plan ahead a lot cause you’ve got to have an all-free Saturday 🙂

  15. Seems like you had a great week 🙂 And congratulations on getting that book. It is always a good feeling when we receive books internationally 😀
And I am so happy about Jackie that she recovered her blog. Though I am still not sure what happened exactly!
And hey good luck with that readathon 🙂 And congratulations again for that award 🙂

    1. Thank you! Yeah, several weeks later and apparently Jackie still had a few problems with the blog, but it seems up and running now 🙂 just tonight! So I can’t wait to blog hop.
      And thank you!

  16. First off, congrats on the ARCs, Evelina! So exciting! Secondly, sorry I haven’t been around lately. If it makes you feel any better about the fact that you haven’t gotten around to blog-hopping, lately I haven’t managed to post OR blog-hop. It’s been rather pathetic. I keep telling myself things will be better once classes are over next month!
Nicole @ Feed Your Fiction Addiction recently posted…The Queen of Bright and Shiny Things by Ann Aguirre: A Dual Review with Danielle HammelefMy Profile

    1. Thank you, Nicole 🙂 yeah, I figured you were very busy in real life, probably, because at one point I wanted to link up a discussion posts but didn’t find the linkup 🙂 I guess I’ll go and batch link up all my April posts in this one as well, cause I missed that linkup xD

I really hope things will be better for you! Don’t worry about it, we won’t forget you for sure – I just hope you can relax, because I know how business like that can generate bad feelings and anxiety. I hope everything is much better when classes stop!

  17. D’aw. Thank you friend! Your shout out means a TON to me. While I am able to comment and blog hop again, my blog is still in limbo. EXTRA limbo now. O_o My domain is provisioning which could take another 10 days! WHAT?! Unacceptable. The problem is that I already have my SQL database and site structure uploaded to the new host, so I can’t even write crappy hiatus update posts any longer. #Annoyed

Seriously, if this doesn’t happen quickly, I’m going to pull out a lightsabre and make some damage. Because blog. I need blog!

I also COULDN’T BE MORE EXCITED ABOUT YOUR BOOKMAIL!!!! Bookmail is the absolute BESTEST. And this is not only ARC bookmail. But Tor ARC book mail for one of your favorite series?! YES! Wells must be cranking these books out of three is almost on the shelves. Wasn’t All System Red a 2018 Nebula or Hugo or Alex winner? Something like that. You know. For 2018. Like this year?! Help me figure this out.

I love that you’ve abandoned your strict scheduling. Why? Because you need to give yourself some breathing space. It’s good to take breaks sometimes. Reading is still fun, right? 😉
    Jackie B recently posted…Hiatus Update #3My Profile

    1. I am glad your blog stuff is solved already 🙂 I can’t wait to read more stuff by you soon.

And you’re right, All Systems Red was a nominee for the Nebula, Phillip K. Dick and Goodreads choice (some 2018, some 2017), and the ALA Alex Award winner. No, I’m not that smart. I just opened Goodreads xD it came out in 2017 though! In May. So a year ago! Which makes me incredibly happy that they’re releasing TWO this year. So happy! I am very, very excited about this series.

And reading is thankfully always fun 🙂
