Sunday post #40 New Year, New Not-So-Lofty Goals

For some reason, this week has been so long, hasn’t it? What with all the holidays, it seems I’ve lost track of time. Nothing new to report in the bookish realm! With 2018 at our door, it seems everyone is uplifted and hopeful, and taking it easy with their goals! So am I. Look at this:

Ahead of schedule… #FeelsGoodMan

~ Last Week On The Blog ~

Last week we finally embarked on the #NewBloggers 101 post series, and I promise so much more content! There should be something weekly. So this week we had a discussion about a very important question – when should one start requesting books? Then I also gave a shoutout to all my favorite bloggers, AKA the bookblogger / booktuber tag. And last, but not least at all – the review for Creatures of Will and Temper by Molly Tanzer, which was one of my favorite books last year! Go check it out.

~ Coming Up Next Week~

Since I am working with other bloggers on some of this content, the timeline is still subject to change! But if everything goes well, and I certainly hope it will, we should have a guide on how to make your NetGalley and Edelweiss profiles top notch, plus a guide on how to start using Edelweiss. There will also be a buddy read review of Dumplin’, and a list of feel good books for when you have the lonelies. Enjoy!

~ Little Book Haul ~

Well, it’s smaller than usually! And believe it or not, I’ve only requested ONE book in the past three weeks (and it might not even be granted!) So imagine what a good bookworm I’ve been. No Sad Songs is a book about tough decisions and what it means to be taking care of a loved one with Alzheimer’s, Chasing Eveline (hey, almost my name!) seems to be something of a coming of age story about a girl who wants to reconnect with her mother who has left her, plus some indie music love, and Doorways in the Sand seems to be an inventive sci-fi adventure that most of my friends seem to have rated 5 stars!

So how has your week been? What did you haul?

As usual, I’m linking up with the Sunday post meme at Kimba’s book blog and Stacking The Shelves over at Tynga’s Reviews.

I’m Evelina and I try to blog about books that matter, with a bit of fun there too! Disability and equality will be topics you see a lot, but there’s also a lot of scifi, fantasy and… GIFs. I’m also the proud founder of #ARCsAnonymous.

  1. I hauled way too many books this week, but fortunately I even read a couple and I am halfway though other so… totally not feeling guilty for my stack.

I love the newbloggers series and I cannot wait for the next post in the series!

    1. Thankfully, I didn’t haul as many as I used to last year, but I still hauled some AFTER I even wrote this post xD for next week!! 😀

And I guess we have to stop feeling guilty about our stacks sooner or later 😀 #StopTheGuiltTrip 😀

I’m so glad you like my post series 🙂 super happy about that and thank you again!

  2. I’ve only regained my sense of time this week due to my return to work so I finally know what day it is! But it means I have been so darn tired all week which has been less fun. I am feeling positive about reading this week, though, even if I’ve not finished a book and I have plans for blogging again which is great. I am starting off 2018 well (even if really I am starting book related things in the second week of the year while I adjust back to work hours).

    1. Haha I know what you mean 😀 it’s especially hard to get back to life after the holidays, when the week schedule just falls apart somehow. Or the day vs night schedule as well. LOL

I have also just sort of finished one book (that I had started before the new year xD) so you’re not alone!

  3. You were busy this week! I’m excited to say hello to everyone on the chat server tomorrow morning, but then I’ll have to abandon all of you to finish the mountain of work that is currently on my bed. I don’t know how y’all will survive without me! *makes dramatic face*

I’m excited to read the posts about NetGalley. Because even though I’ve been using it since 2015, I still feel lost whenever I get on it. lol

Have a wonderful week, Evelina! 🙂

    1. Yep, indeed I was 🙂 and I think I will still be very busy xD

Yeah, I was wondering whether you’d come back to the server! I thought you were probably very busy. We are definitely waiting for you to come back 🙂

I hope my posts can help out! You’ve been blogging for a while, so you probably know everything, but sometimes it’s some little detail or trick we still don’t know 🙂

Thank you! And let me wish you better health for 2018 once again 🙂

  4. A week in and already ahead of your GR goal. Gotta love that. LOL
I’ll be looking forward to the Edelweiss/NetGalley profile article. I’d be great to learn some new ways to improve my profile. Always room for improvement! 🙂

    1. Well, I deliberately set a low goal 😀 #SMART lol thanks! You are an experienced blogger, so I’m sure your profile is already glowing, but who knows 🙂 sometimes it’s something little we never knew!

  5. Yes the reading challenge! This is actually my first year ever in participating the Goodreads reading challenge. I have no idea how it will work out though XD

Have a great week! And yes, your book haul is slightly less gigantic than usual.

  6. I’m really, really, really excited for the upcoming posts, they sound like exactly what I need right now A few days ago I tried to make my Edelweiss profile more appealing, so I’m very much interested in a post offering a little help, because I felt kind of lost 😮 I also do need a few feel good books right now 🙂

    1. Aw, thank you, I really hope I don’t disappoint 🙂 will be trying my best!
Edelweiss can be daunting, but I’m sure we’ll be able to help. I’m not saying my Edelweiss is perfect, but at least I can give some pointers, and I also looked into other bloggers’ opinions on this, so I think it will be an alright resource 🙂 the post is coming out today! So I am excited if you all will like it 🙂

      1. I’m currently catching up on reading blog posts (university and writing papers sure kept me busy this week) and I’m super excited to get to your post as well. From what I’ve seen so far it’s amazing, but I shall devote more time to carefully read it 🙂

    1. I totally loved it 🙂 strangely, although I don’t like Dolly Parton at all, but I loved the references somehow 😀 it just made it so genuine! Like some far away land lore, almost. It was truly a great book, and I’m excited for the sequel 🙂

  7. I’m trying to start 2018 sensibly regarding books… I know, I know – a daft idea! Still, so far so good! I hope you have a great reading and blogging year, Avalinah 🙂

  8. Getting back into the swing of things after the holidays is no fun. My son has been home all week due to cold and snow, but my daughter started back her homeschool schedule. So, it’s been a little chaotic at my house. Hopefully, this week will back to normal, at least till the next big weather maker comes. Enjoy the new books! I am curious about No Sad Songs. 🙂 Happy reading…

    1. So your son goes to school, but your daughter is homeschooled? I wonder why, just curious 🙂 I hope the weather figures itself out and things can go back to normal soon 🙂 have a great week!

  9. Since I still have five ARCs on my stack, with release dates ranging from 1/23 to 5/15, I am trying not to request too many right now. Although I do have three requests out there…and you never know when they will come through. I try to arrange the release dates so as not to overwhelm me.

Enjoy your week and your New Year. Thanks for visiting my blog.

    1. Looks like you’re on top of your ARCs 🙂 most of my ‘problem’ ones are from 2016 though. Back when I didn’t know the first thing about requesting or even book blogging. So those are what’s causing my bad ratio 🙂 but I’m sure I’ll figure them out soon. At least the really poor quality ones from the very start, I think I’ll just go through them and prune them if necessary.

  10. I’m glad your new blogger posts are going well. I’ll have to look at your tips for NG/ Edelweiss since I don’t request ARC’s but may want to in the future? I’m sure that ‘ll be helpful! And Doorways in the Sand looks interesting.

    Have a nice week!

  11. My schedule has been off since the holidays. My co-worker went out of town so I covered her shifts as well as my shifts and it just threw off my schedule entirely. I’m definitely going to check out your post on NG and EW profile because I’ve been wanting to update mine but I’m not sure what I need to add.

I hope you have a wonderful week!

    1. Oh dang, that seems tough. I hope you can have some time off soon! The NG/Edelweiss post should come out later today 🙂 I am very glad you want to hear about this stuff, I hope I can help you out! Have a lovely week 🙂

  12. You really are on a roll with all of these blogging groups, blog posts and everything else, Evelina. I admire you so much, how do you do it all, haha 🙂 I can’t wait to read all of your blogging posts, I am sure they will be so useful to many bloggers, me included haha 🙂 And yay for being ahead of schedule on your Goodreads challenge already, you’re doing this right! 😛
    Have a lovely week! xx

    1. I don’t know, lately I haven’t been confident that I “do it” and “manage it” xD I wish I could catch up. Been running out of blog posts recently too. Mostly because of all this commotion 😀 but I’m sure I’ll get used to it eventually.

      Thanks, Marie 🙂

  13. This is a cool thing that you’re doing. The supporting of new book bloggers. I wish you the best of luck with it 🙂 I might even check out some of the stuff, since I really just dove in the deep in and am still trying to figure it all out.

    1. Aw, thanks 🙂 yeah, even experienced bloggers sometimes forget or don’t know a certain twist about blogging 😀 essentially, it’s just a way to see things differently, I guess. So far, my posts are geared towards total beginners, but you never know which direction this series might take with time 🙂

  14. No Sad Songs sounds really good. I watched my grandmother’s descent into dementia, which was hard. I can’t even imagine what it must have been like for her. It made Still Alice a difficult read, though, but it’s such a good book. I’m trying to stay away from NetGalley and Edelweiss for the time being. We’ll see if I succeed.

I hope you have a great week, Evelina!

    1. Aw, thanks 🙂 I have already read something since the year started, but this year’s been so easy on the reading, cause I set myself an easy goal 😀 I can only advise doing that, at the moment xD
Oh wait, do you have to have STARTED a book in 2018? xD I thought you could only FINISH it in 2018 for it to count for the backlist xD

  15. Way to smash that Goodread’s goal!! 🙂

Really enjoyed your article on “When to Start Requesting ARC’s.” I told myself no arcs when I started, just because I had a million other things I should focus on for the blog first. I’ve been thinking of *maybe* signing up for Netgalley and trying for 1-2 this Spring. Your posts have me inspired! 🙂

    1. Thanks!! I’m glad you loved that post, and thanks again 🙂 your will displays a lot of strength if you’ve been able to keep yourself away 🙂 kudos to you. But I really think you should try one or two 😀
I have been doing the same with print ARCs though. I know I could ask, and SOME internationals gets approved, but I’m like.. No.. Later, maybe :DDD

  16. I’m glad to hear that I’m not the only one losing track of time because of the holidays. I found myself wondering if it was Sunday or Monday – or maybe if I slept a whole day – a few times these past weeks. =P

I can’t wait to read the post on how to write a good Netgalley/Edelweiss profile. I always have issues with Edelwiess and how to make my profile good enough for my requests to be accepted.

The cover of Chasing Eveline is so pretty. I haven’t heard of its before, but after reading your brief descriptions, I may take a look at it.

    Happy readings!

    1. Well, I am freelance, so I lose my sense of time something awful every week, because I don’t really keep to a fixes schedule much 😀 but yes, the holidays can unbalance you even more than that!

As I’m answering these comments late, I am hoping you enjoyed the NG/EW profile post 🙂

And yes, it is a lovely cover, isn’t it!

  17. Wow, so many wonderful posts. Guess I will need some time to read through all of them. But thanks a lot for the Edelweiss information. Though I am not much of a ebook reader, but that info seems quite right after all the restrictions Netgalley is giving its requests lately.

    Best wishes
    Vi @Inkvotary

  18. Good luck with the reading challenge, Evelina! Also, you requested on book in the past three weeks? *cries* Show me your ways! It’s a goal accomplished to stop yourself from requesting more books. Can’t wait for the next installment of NewBloggers101; I really need to understand Edelweiss, lol 😀 Plus, Chasing Eveline looks like a wonderful read so your review is definitely anticipated <3

    1. Thank youuuu! 🙂 well, actually, I’ve been trying to stop requesting for two years now, so I would say IT COMES WITH TIME xD xD xD but you still never know when you will freak out and request 10 books again :DDD (I don’t know if that made you feel any better! *hides* xD)

I wonder if the Edelweiss post helped? 🙂 I’ve been seeing a lot of bloggers on the discords creating Edelweiss profiles after it 😀

I’ll have to make a point of reading Chasing Eveline sooner then! 🙂

  19. Evelina, I don’t think I have joined New Blogger 101 Group. I’ve been so busy I haven’t been really around and have been behind with visiting.

I hope you enjoy your new books and have a wonderful week. ❤️

  20. I feel like I’m taking it way too easy with my Goodreads goal. Only one book in ten days and not ahead of schedule anymore. But, I’ll start reading and then won’t stop so there’s that to look forward to.
I didn’t haul any books. I just got a Barnes and Noble gift card which I will hoard and find what I want carefully.
Hope you have a great week!
Adriana @ BooksOnHerMind recently posted…Bout of Books 21My Profile

    1. What defines “way too easy”? xD 😀 for me, last year I pushed myself way too much, so now it’s time for a smaller goal. But if you’re thinking you’re taking it too easy, I have a friend who set her goodreads goal are ONE book, and yes, you heard me right 😀 so you’re probably not taking it THAT easy 😀
You have a great week too, thanks!

  21. I like your new direction towards more discussion post! So many interesting things to learn from them. And I too love that “Ahead of schedule” thing from Goodreads. 2018 is looking good.

  22. Happy New Year!!! I’m actually really glad to see you taking it easy with your reading goals. Do you plan on adding other goals this year? I know you– you really like to jump into new things and connect with people. I think this goal of only 52 books will help keep you sane throughout. Not that you won’t be pushing yourself to read a ton of ARCs… 😉

Chasing Eveline… it’s so close to your name! Other than Anne of Avonlea, have you found your name in other books? Any you would recommend?

Doorways in the Sand sounds totally up my alley. I will be waiting with baited breath for your review!

    1. I haven’t been thinking of new goals 🙂 I might stumble upon a nice challenge, who knows! And yes!! I still haven’t read it, but there’s Evelina by Fanny Burnett, and it even matches the spelling! Never happens in English 😀 but nope, I haven’t really read anything other with my name in it, I don’t think xD
