Book hauls, Sunday post

Sunday post #20 Back from vacation, but in a little bit of a reading slump

Linking up with the usual crew for the Sunday meme at Kimba’s book blog.

This was my first week back from the vacation. I expected it to be toughed work-wise, but luckily it wasn’t! It’s not that there was less work, but I guess vacations do help? And thank God for that! However, I seem to have read so much during the vacation that I feel like I’m in a little bit of a slump now. Uh oh… But that may also be the fact that I’m back to the computer and the eyes are getting more tired again. But I hope to get back on track soon.

~ Last Week On The Blog ~

Last week I shared two posts – The Triple Liebster that was quite a fun tag to do and the review for Omnia which is a book I recommend to everyone, as I greatly enjoyed it.

~ Coming Up Next Week~

Next week I’ll be sharing a discussion about all the ways we have insomnia because of books (you’ve all definitely been there!) I hope you enjoy it, and I hope you will even think of ways I haven’t remembered, and share those in the comments. And also, I’ll be reviewing the much-anticipated They Both Die At The End by Adam Silvera.

~ Little Book Haul ~

Overwatch: Anthology Volume 1 Tisha: The Story of a Young Teacher in the Alaskan Wilderness Real Life Super Heroes The History of Love The Orchardist In Case I Go

The Overwatch Anthology is actually for a new project on my blog! I’m quite excited to tell you that my boyfriend wants to write reviews for my blog occasionally too, and he’s into video games, so I couldn’t help grabbing this for him on Edelweiss. That will be his first review on my blog! I’ll try to properly introduce him through a post before that though.

Tisha is about a woman, teaching natives (and non-natives) in Alaska. I’ve marked this book to-read ages ago and it was on sale, so I’ll need to refresh my memory, but I love reading about Alaska and about teaching.

Real Life Super Heroes meanwhile was something I could just not pass up on NetGalley! I even googled if this was true, but apparently – it’s non-fiction about city vigilantes who hide their identity. Basically? Real life super heroes, as a psychological phenomenon. Had to grab it!

The History of Love and The Orchardist are also old to-read list dwellers, but you can read more about them if you click the Goodreads links on the pictures.

And In Case I Go is an Edelweiss ARC – about a boy who is haunted on his grandpa’s behalf? Very interesting.

~ In The Bookish Community ~

Anne @ The Reading Life shares which series you’d better avoid if you don’t want all those sad and bittersweet endings! Spoiler warning – but it’s for a good cause!

Katie @ Bookwise shares a veeeeery fun post about what to do in order to get over a book hangover. I laughed and laughed and laughed…

Julianna @ Blots of Ink and Words lists the reasons why blogging is useful and good for us! Just because sometimes we forget why we’re doing this and need some love.

So that’s my week! What’s new with you?

I’m Evelina and I try to blog about books that matter, with a bit of fun there too! Disability and equality will be topics you see a lot, but there’s also a lot of scifi, fantasy and… GIFs. I’m also the proud founder of #ARCsAnonymous.

  1. I’m so glad you liked Omnia, it’s a pretty dang good read isn’t it? Good stuff. And book related insomnia- that should be a fun discussion topic!

Real Life Super Heroes- now that sounds interesting.

  2. Thank you for sharing my post! I am so touched <3

Your Little Book Haul is actually not that little though XD

You boyfriend likes video games? Me too! What's his favorite? Mine's Dark Souls and Assassin's Creed.

It's okay if you're in a slump. What genre are you craving right now? Maybe I can help you get out of that slump. I am really looking forward to your insomnia post. Literally, a million thoughts popped into my head after reading that title, because as readers we've all been there (sob).

But I do have an idea, maybe you can turn that into a tag? I mean, it seems like a pretty cool idea. It'll make some awesome questions for us to share the times when books make us lose sleep and break our hearts.
Just suggesting, but I still think it's a great idea 😀

And didn' you just come back from vacation XD

    1. XD it’s little as in… half a month’s worth xD but yeah, you’re right, it’s not that little 😀
I laughed when you named your games. His are Dragon Age and Assassin’s Creed xD I like Assassin’s Creed too – I don’t play games (I suck at it), but I like watching when he plays. So he replayed the Assassin’s Creed games with me! Right now we’ve just started Unity (did not like Black Flag much xD Edward is such a prick!!), but he’s played through all of them. Also? You should check out Horizon Zero Dawn 🙂

I’m glad you’re anticipating my post! I feel like I could have written more ways but I only thought of several xD maybe you can add to then in the comments! Maybe not a tag, but you can definitely post an Insomnia v.2 post and link back to mine if you want, I would looooove to see 🙂

As for my slump, hell, I just don’t want to sit and read at all 😀 I think I pushed myself too much. I suppose I will try and remedy that with audiobooks for now 🙂 maybe it’ll help.

Yes, I did just come back from vacation, but it was too short xD much too short! (like it always is)

      1. Edward can be a prick, but it’s always hard to hate on the main characters 😉

What do you guys think about Unity right now? They are notorious for the glitches.

Also, prepare the tissues. (You’ll understand why at the end *sobs*. Unless you have already been spoiled).

Black Flag is actually pretty fun, but Ezio’s games would forever be the best.

I’ll ask my dad about Horizon Zero Dawn!

It’s okay if you don’t want to read, go watch some movies or TV! That usually works too.

INSOMNIA V. 2 SOUNDS AMAZING. I will totally link it back to you. Maybe kind of like a collab 😀

        1. It’s not hard at all! XD I hated both him and that traitorous son of his 😀 ugh!

We only just started Unity, but you know, nothing will be the same after both Desmond and Ezio finished their story 🙁 I loved that story arc very much. As for glitches 😀 I think nothing beats the glitch where Edward’s ship just plummets through the sea and leaves a waterfall into the void? 😀 have you seen that one? It’s hilarious. Can’t say we experienced it though, bf only showed me on YouTube, I think.

Yeah, my bf also said that Blackflag is GREAT for the actual gameplay. But shit for the story xD which is probably why I hated it. Because I only watched 😀 yeah, nothing can replace Ezio and Desmond…

Yeah, sure, you can write a sequel for my post and say “inspired by” 🙂 sounds great!

Horizon Zero Dawn is PS4 exclusive though, I think? Although it might be on the PC too. Watch some trailers 🙂 being a bookworm, I think the story will just hook you! It’s just too crazy.

  3. I definitely get insomnia from reading books, well maybe not insomnia exactly, I just lose a lot of sleep when I am trying to get in one more chapter. I am looking forward to your post about it.
In Case I Go and Tisha both look really good. I hope you enjoy all your new books. It’s cool that your bf is going to be posting on your site. Have a great week!

  4. I love the sound of the post regarding book-related insomnia… You’re right, I regularly go without sleep in favour of finishing off a cracking read though these days I need a lot less sleep than I used to, so it generally doesn’t seem to bother me all that much:). How exciting that your boyfriend will be also contributing to your blog – it’s always lovely to share an interest. I hope you have a wonderful week and that the reading slump quickly passes:)

    1. Thanks! Yeah, I hope you like the post. There are so many ways I can fail to sleep because of a book, and it’s definitely not just reading 😀 I hope you like it!

    1. Well, I haven’t got him to write yet 😀 only to sort of… start reading the comic… slowly 😀 I hope it all works out. I don’t want to quickly read the comic on the last day to give a half assed review 😀
Yeah, hopefully you’re back! I do enjoy your blog cause you have great tastes, they happen to match most of what I like! That’s rare 🙂

  5. I am leaping from book to book lately, starting one or two and then picking up another. I haven’t had a vacation, but I don’t think I deserve one, since I’m retired…and can pretty much do whatever I want each day.

I’m glad you enjoyed your vacation…here’s to finding your reading mojo.

    Thanks for visiting my blog.

    1. Yeah, your Sunday posts make me think you’re half on vacation most of the time 😀 which is truly enviable and I’m so happy for you! Most people I know can’t really retire until they’re… well, ancient. Or sick. Ah, the way of the world.
But that’s exactly what’s been happening to me – the inability to stick to one or another book. It’s so annoying! Hope we can both figure it out soon. Slumps are bad for bloggers 🙂

        1. Yeah 😀 I hope retirement is still a thing when I’m older… the way things are going, my generation will never retire, it seems.

  6. I’m glad you had a good vacation, and that the return to work wasn’t too hard, Evelina.

Reading slumps are the worst! I am reading like a fiend these days, it’s like I know I won’t have as much time to read once school starts again and I’ll be busy with work and all. I have a ton of reviews to write, though 😉

Have a wonderful week ahead and happy reading.

  7. I’ve been going through a bit of a book slump myself. This whole year has been rough for me reading-wise…but what do you do. I’m curious about They Both Die at the End. I skipped the arc, but might snag it from the library. Glad work wasn’t bad this week; sometimes you really just do need a break. Happy reading!
    Natflix&Books recently posted…Weekly Rewind 8.19.17My Profile

    1. Thanks! As for They Both Die At The End, it’s a good book, but I will give some warnings in the review, it’s not an easy book to read. So you should look at the triggers before reading it 🙂

  8. Oh I can’t wait to read your post about bookish insomnia! Man, that affects me frequently!!! Glad you had a nice, easy transition back to work from vacation.
I am curious about the real life superheroes book. I love non-fiction books about psychology (I read a bunch about murders and killers), so understanding vigilantism sounds fascinating!
    Have a great week!
Samantha recently posted…Sunday Post: Setting an alarm is such a bummer! My Profile

    1. Yeah, I felt that bookish insomnia is a very relevant topic 🙂 hope you’ll like the post! And yes! I’ll take some good nonfiction any day. You can still grab it on NetGalley – it’s not going to be archived until the 31st, if I remember right.
      Thanks for visiting 🙂

    1. I already had the reviews to write before I even went, so yeah 😀 In Case I Go is one of my favorites from that list too. Thanks 🙂

  9. When I saw Overwatch, I actually thought you were a gamer for a second hahah Pretty cool that he’s going to be reviewing it on your blog!! 😀 Oh, and Adam Silvera seems to be an author who ALWAYS succeeds at making his readers cry. I wonder if you were amazed by his book. 😀

    1. Hi Lashaan, thanks for visiting! 🙂 nope. I’m not a gamer – I’m hopeless at it 😀 I freak out and have shock anxiety 😀 but I do watch him play and play some Diablo together with him sometimes 🙂 not as demanding a game, reflex-wise.
I actually only gave Silvera 3 stars… much too sad xD but it wasn’t a bad book. Just wayyyy too much for me to handle 😀

  10. Yay! I’m glad your week back wasn’t as bad as you expected. It seems like, as usual, you had a really productive week, too! Great job keeping up with your schedule; I’m really impressed (I can’t stick to a schedule to save my life for some reason– at least with blogging).

Were all those books from your haul from the last week?! Oy girl, how on earth do you keep up with your TBR? Are you drowning in piles of books? In fact… how many of those are physical books vs. ebooks? No WONDER your NetGalley TBR is so long…

I love that you share links to other bloggers (I know I’ve probably said that a million times) — but how do you decide what to share?

    1. Yeah, all those books were pretty much from the whole month, cause I missed doing a haul in the weeks before 🙂 Actually, I’m doing better this month! And doing better than yours truly xD cause last time I checked, you had over 1k books 😀 I only have like 500-600. In more concrete terms, I’m doing better, but in general… I’m doing the same as you xD if you… “zoom out” 😀 big picture and all… we’re screwed 😀

And as for physical books, there are only like a 50, and they are almost all old and books that belonged to my family rather than me. I don’t buy print books here cause the prices are ridiculous. So most of my books are either copies off the internet, kindle books or eARCs 🙂

I’ve only started sharing other people’s blog posts recently – cause I feel like I want to give something back, and it’s a good way to socialize too 🙂 normally, when I’m reading people’s blogs during the week, I’ll find something cool that I liked and I will post the link into my Sunday post empty draft, then just format it all on Saturday or Sunday. But this week I think I’m going to be screwed, cause I’m working again 😀 so I think I’ll probably have to go blog hopping on Saturday or Sunday when I’m writing the post.

Also – missed you! Glad you visited to comment 🙂 I dropped by your blog yesterday too.

      1. Hahaha. Yes, I definitely have a TBR of over 1000 books. It’s… intimidating. But, as a future post will present, I am changing the way I think about my TBR. I want it to be my ally and friend, not my scornful frenemy. (Holy crap. Frenemy is in my dictionary! How did that get there?! I am not being called out for a typo!) — We are so screwed, but I want to flip the script on that. No more evil TBR!

I have stopped buying print books unless I will re-read them a billion times. I just don’t have the space for dollars for it. Right now most of the physical books I own are my faves. I go to the Free Little Library in my neighborhood once a month to drop a few books off. It’s fun!

I love thinking about sharing blog posts as a good way to give back to the community. You might be surprised to hear that I also struggle with blog hopping. I have a schedule! But I struggle to stick with it all the time. I try to visit all my favorite blogs at least once a week, but lately that list has gotten so long I haven’t found any new blogger friends. How on earth do you manage to do it?! Do you have a time-turner? Share it with me. 🙂

I’ve missed you too. We’re both back in our jobs, which is just… causing communication difficulties. I can’t wait to get back into a regular conversational cadence!

        1. Frenemy xD I am looking forward to your post! Cause that sounds interesting. I’m also launching a new meme at the end of this month, similar theme – to monitor your own ARC progress, and I’ll be doing linkups (provided it works, and yes, it’s supposed to be a free service. We’ll see xD)

Yeah, I don’t buy print books myself either. The fact that they’re more expensive and I can’t take pics for my blog of the Lithuanian versions is just part of it, I think. I’m not where the space would be an issue yet, but the kindle is just so convenient anyway 😀

We used to have a free little library. That I helped build and launch. And then I saw it torn down for around 10 times. It was heart-breaking. That’s the kind of place I live in :/ although there’s one in this neighbourhood, it hasn’t been broken yet. Maybe it’s just my mom’s neighbourhood. Sucks regardless. But even in those that remain alive, the only books you’ll find will be Christian pamphlets and stuff you’d use for kindling 😀

I don’t have a time turner! Absolutely wish I did though xD I don’t feel like I get stuff done so much though, other people post like every day. I CAN’T EVEN. But hey! We get by, I guess? However, I’m glad to know that I’m not the only one that struggles with blog hopping xD sometimes it’s not even the time though, it’s more like, even if you’ve got a minute, you’re just so tired you feel like a zombie, and it’s an unbearable thought that you’d have to go and blog hop when it’s like that.

          1. Pft, why can’t you take pictures for your blog of the Lithuanian versions? I think that would be super cool.

!! You built a Free Little Library and someone TORE IT DOWN?! I will hunt them down. You give me their locations and they will vanish. How RUDE. did you put a new one right back up? I would have. I’m stubborn like that. and a bit passive aggressive, I guess. UGH. I’m so angry about this!

My biggest struggle with blog hopping is that I go to people’s blogs, read their posts, and then get interrupted in the middle of reading their post or commenting– so I *think* I’ve blog hopped, but I never left my mark. The whole point is to have a discussion, right? Right.
Jackie B. recently posted…Snow CrashMy Profile

          2. We did, and we kept fixing it… then some mysterious hero kept fixing it 😀 eventually it just got stolen (? Or just gone?) and we didn’t after that. That place is just a bad place for the little library. But yes. Evil!!

Well you definitely always leave your mark on mine 😀 sub-10 super long comments! Jackie has made the rounds 😀 seriously, it makes me so happy to find those! But I’ll answer the rest later, I’m actually on the bus. Going to meet my sister who flew in for a week from the States!
